Sleepless nights are the least of Jessica & Greg’s worries. If they don’t break their reliance on debt, they are going to be walking right past the real estate office with all the pictures of dream homes and straight to the bankruptcy trustee…and then on to the divorce attorney!
Debt ruins marriages! FACT. Money should NOT be the reason for breaking up…ever!
“My credit check shocked the sh*t out of me,” Greg shares. “How could a couple ‘lates’ on my house payment drop my scores…and my wife’s scores…a few hundred points?”
“That’s ridiculous,” adds Greg! Now, Jessica’s p*ssed at me for a couple stupid mistakes. What the h*ell.”
A couple “stupid” mistakes? According to Jessica, it was much more than a couple stupid mistakes. Jessica is on the brink of divorce. She’s had enough of Greg’s “screw-ups.”
“Greg thinks he’s some kind of financial wizard. He never pays bills on time. He refuses to let me take over paying the bills. My recent credit check hammered the last nail in his coffin,” Jessica laments.
- Strike ONE: Screwing up a marriage over finances is flat-out stupid. Have the good sense, Greg, to pay on time or hand the bill paying off to Jessica AND….
THE BASE HIT?
They Are Not Free, Greg!
If that’s not bad enough, Greg jumped at the opportunity to get his credit reports & scores FREE. Or so he thought. Greg, like so many others, thought free meant free. At the website with all the free-credit-report (DOT.COM) jingles, Greg completed their application…to get his free reports.
Somewhere during the application, Greg ended up signing up for credit monitoring at $39.95 per month.
- Strike 2: Greg fell for deceptive advertising, not even realizing he had signed up to pay $39.95 a month for something he didn’t want.
Let’s get something straight right now: the ONLY website offering your 3 credit reports 100% free is www.annualcreditreport.com.
This website is established by the federal government under the FACT Act. Deceptive advertising? Yep, that’s exactly how the Courts has decided in a number of similar cases
He didn’t know he did this. He thought he was getting a free 3-in-1 report with his scores. He thought free meant free.
C’mon, Greg, there’s NO free lunch or free credit reports.
With hope, Greg & Jessica will never see a strike 3! Breaking up over money & debt is not worth it. This easily is a manageable problem.
What’s the problem, Greg? Your irresponsibility has damaged your relationship with your wife. Why?
Your unwillingness to prevent this irresponsibility (instead of a one-time accident) suggests you don’t care much about your wife.
Not turning your bill-paying over to Jessica (who’s more than capable of handling this task) means you don’t value her or you’re a freakin’ idiot. Which is it?
I don’t get it, Greg. Why would you disrespect your wife in this manner. Intentionally causing her credit scores to suffer (severely) is not cool.
Jessica, what you do about your marriage obviously is between Greg and you. I hope you don’t split over money. I hope Greg agrees to some changes after sincerely apologizing.
In the meantime, go into my book, “The Busy Person’s Credit Makeover,” and carefully read my tip on the “Goodwill Letter.” I think this is a perfect time for a goodwill letter–http://www.fixmyuglycredit.com/credit-repair-offer.html
By no means am I perfect (just ask my wife and kids). My wife is more responsible about paying bills on time. I admit. You see, I’ve learned something over the years…it’s a real “secret” worth discovering.
The SECRET, my friend, is all about ADMITTING to ourselves and then to others we’re not in total control.
