A fresh start in California...half a country away from the nightmare years....Kris and her boys accepted Kris' parents' invitation to return home to California to move in with them.

Hard Lesson Learned #TWO: Credit repair companies do not fix people's credit.

Legitimate credit repair companies or educational materials do not promise to remove all derogatory accounts (information) on your reports. That's ridiculous. By the way, how much personal help do you think you'll get for $29.95, $79.95 or even $99.95 per month? Credit repair is not about worthless dispute letters.

And these same credit (repair) companies don't even send their worthless form letters from your zip code.

Listen to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), when it states that a credit repair company cannot do anything for you (and your bad credit) that you can't do for yourselves. To this we'll add, once you learn what to do and how to do it, credit repair is NOT rocket science.

This is not about "finding" time; this is about "making" time! Fixing your credit is not just about stopping the debt collector's phone calls (all day, every day) and letters hand-delivered by your friendly mail delivery person.

Fixing your credit is also about hearing "YES, you're approved!" It's about giving yourself pay raises. It's about getting rid of the persistent phone calls and debt collection letters.

**Reality Check** Don't forget, this is California we're talking about. A "starter" home in California costs $420,000. In many parts of California, one cannot even buy a home of any kind for $420,000. Though Kris had improved her scores, she had not improved them enough to ge a lower interest rate.

But hey, who's counting? An 8% rate is a whole lot better than 9.99%.

For a "normal" look at just how UGLY bad credit is on a mortgage payment, the following chart is...well...more normal ($165,000 30-year fixed rate mortgage) and more ugly when you see it on paper!

**Reality Check** Forget trying to get a mortgage with a *middle* FICO below 620-650. It's not happening today, even if you were desperate enough and not informed enough to know of a better way to buy your home. By the way, there is a better way to buy your home with bad credit, no bank qualifying & no big down payment. We'll get to that later.

"Of course, I knew I was overpaying for everything....when all you hear is "NO"...and I heard "NO" a bunch. At one point, I couldn't even get a cell phone. You see, I was thrilled to overpay. I overpaid for my car too. I know that. I faced that reality. I had to have to have a car. When you don't have the credit, you take what you can get," Kris added.

The following chart actually is better than most "buy here, pay here" car lots. It doesn't matter whether the chart is dead-on, high or low. The bottom line is that bad credit is damn expensive. How bad?

For a $20,000 car loan, the person with ugly credit--if he can get financed at all--will overpay $9,213.15 for the priviliege of getting financed. Wow.

As expensive as bad credit is, that's half the battle. Now you get to learn just how screwed up the credit reporting system is.

Hard Lesson Learned #FIVE: The Big 3 (Equifax, Experian & Transunion) do not want you to repair your damaged credit.

The Big 3 profit off your bad credit. These private companies called the Big 3 are not eager to correct mistakes THEY make to your credit file.

According to the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG):
~80% of all credit reports include errors!
~25% of all reports contain errors serious enough to result in mortgage application rejections!

Unfortunately, this is a serious dilemma.

Further, it is estimated 82 million Americans suffer from damaged credit (*Source: Government Accountability Office) and the recent foreclosure numbers guarantee more bad credit...more credit reporting errors...more time, frustration & money spent fighting and suffering from bad credit.

Irvine-based RealtyTrac Inc. reports a total of 446,726 homes nationwide were targeted by some sort of foreclosure activity from July to September 2007, up 100.1 percent from 223,233 properties in the year-ago period.
