Someone ordered items from a mail catalog in my name and I have filed an identity theft report. Most items came to me but others went to an unknown address. Once I realized these weren't Christmas gifts, I returned any unopened boxes to the company and began to pay for items I kept. I filed a police report and the investigator closed the case already and I sent the report to the mail order company. They are doing their own investigation. How long before this starts coming off my credit report? Shouldn't this be done and over since I gave them a police report?

So last year I found out a credit line under PayPal had been opened with my ss#. I've contacted PP, and had them close the account only thing there is a balance still in that account so they have forward "my debt" to a collecting agency. I've put a fraud alert in my file to prevent this again and have asked the credit bureaus to send me a credit report.
So my question is what proof do I need to file a police report?
Because if I want detailed information about the fraud to file a dispute with collecting agencies and PayPal I need a police report, but to file a police report I need the detailed information about the fraud first!! Anyone please help!!

I Cali, it is considered a "wabbler" law, meaning it could either be considered a felony or misdemeanor. If so, I'll be contacting the Federal Trade Commission regarding the issue.

Had quite a scare yesterday. Within 15 minutes, I got three calls from three different insurance agencies claiming that I put in an online request for an auto insurance quote. One agent told me the make and model of the supposed car, which is a car I do not own. For all three, I told them to erase/ignore the quote request.

I became more and more nervous throughout the day, so I went and pulled my credit reports. Everything seems to be in order. No mistakes that I can see (except for the insurance agencies in the "inquiry" sections). Credit score has not changed either.

Also, checked bank accounts and credit cards. Everything is in order. No funny charges or anything like that.

What should I do now? There doesn't seem to be anything going on at the moment, but I'm still nervous about the whole situation. What steps should I take now to ensure my identity is not stolen?

I had to send in a document for work. It was on one of those PDF's that you can print out but not save anything to it. I'm in the middle of a transfer so I had to turn in this form to my future employer (it's with a government agency so it's not a scam). But the scanner at my office wasn't working so I had to get the document scanned at Office Max and they put it on an external hard drive for me.

But now I'm worried the employees at Office Max will steal my identity. The form had my social security number on it. I asked them to delete my document from their office computer and they say they delete all customer files. But who knows if they actually deleted it?

What do you think? Should my SSN be safe or do you think I jeopardized my safety by paying to have my documents scanned at Office Max?

Thanks for your help.

They seem incapable of delivering mail to the correct address. In the last couple of months I have had 3 bank statements go missing and had to cancel and then renew all my bank cards. I have had letters for neighbours from the DWP, banks and utility bills. How easy it would be to "steal" these people's ID if I was dishonest. Should it therefore be made a criminal offence to deliver mail to the wrong address?.

It was some guy who kept going on and on about some cable installation. I said no we didn't ask for it. I kept asking him from what company he's calling from, and he kept ignoring my question and jumping to other topics.
